Pitched Roofing Problems: Roof Valley Blockages and Cracked Lead

01/06/2015
Following on from last week's blog on slipped or broken tiles, we are looking at further common issues with pitched roofing. This week we are looking at roof valley blockages and cracked lead in a roof valley. Unblocking a roof valley If your roof valley gets blocked it can become a real nuisance, however unblocking it is a simple maintenance task and should be done whenever there is a visible sign of clogging. A roof valley is the 'v' shaped channels that run up and down the 'folds' of your roof. When the valley gets blocked with leaves and debris, it can affect your roof and a large amount of water could end up in your roof cavity. To avoid this, contact a professional roofing contractor who can fix this issue for you. Replacement of lead in a valley If the lead in the valley of your roof is cracked then chances are it will need to be replaced. This can take around a day to fix and involves putting up an access tower, stripping the tiles either side of the valley and then removing the old lead. The valley is normally supported by wooden valley boards which should be checked for damage or rot and replaced if necessary. As lead can be expensive, many roofing companies offer fibreglass GRP closed valley alternatives which can be neater and is less inclined to clog up. Another option (in some cases) is to use valley tiles which remove the need for a lead or GRP valley; the row of slates just continues round the join. Both of these issues can be resolved by bringing in a professional roofer and RG Leverett has just the team to help. We provide an extensive pitched roofing service and have been carrying out installations of this kind for many years. All of our installations come with a minimum 20 year guarantee, giving you peace of mind.
