Best Ways to Remove Moss from Your Roof

14/06/2018
Moss on a pitched roof.

Due to the fact it doesn’t grow roots and can grow in places without soil, moss is a plant that has colonised rooftops. It is commonly found on roofs and is occasionally the centre of a debate about whether or not it causes damage. Many people say it’s no issue to have moss on your roof. Others say it must be removed at all costs. Common sense applies here: a small dusting of organic matter will not cause any problems, but a large build-up of moss - especially around the roofline - should be removed.

Moss – Good or Bad?

Small amounts of moss or lichen or on your roof should not cause an issue. However if the moss is allowed to grow it can become a problem that can cause damage to your roof. Here are some of the main issues that moss growth can cause:

Moisture – Moss acts like a sponge absorbing large amounts of moisture, which will leave your roof constantly wet. A lot of wet moss equals a lot of extra weight. Plus, if moisture gets underneath the roof tiles, it could rot the timbers supporting your roof.

Blocked gutters – Due to the fact that they collect water running off of the roof, gutters are a hotbed for moss growth. A blocked gutter will stop the water draining away properly which could cause leaks and other problems further down the line.

Mould growth – The moisture that moss collects can cause other issues such as mould growth. If the moisture escapes underneath the tiles, it will saturate the wooden beams and these damp conditions will encourage mould growth.

Removing the Moss

N.b. Removing moss must be done carefully. You can cause great damage to yourself and your roof by clambering around on the roof.

The best way to remove moss is with a stable ladder and a hose pipe with a strong jet of water, you can remove some of the moss yourself. If your gutters are particularly clogged up by the moss you might have to put some rubber gloves on and clear them by hand.
