Why Are Concrete Tiles the Nation’s Favourite?
05/05/2016Here in the East of England, we like to be different. Our tiling habits are no exception to this rule, and the single lapped baked clay pantiles on many of our buildings are a Viking throwback. The rest of the country (except for the small town of Bridgwater in Somerset where pantiles are also common but nobody knows why!) mainly choose concrete as their roof tile of choice. In fact, nationwide, 60% of roofs have concrete tiling - making concrete the nation’s favourite roofing material.
Any Colour You Like
One advantage that concrete has over clay is that it is easier to dye. Concrete tiles are available in a large variety of colours. All the shades of grey between shining white and slate black are available. You may wish to choose the traditional reds and oranges that mimic clay tiles, and you can even find concrete tiles in green, blue or yellow.
Strong and Long-Lasting
Concrete is an immensely strong and durable material. It will survive storm-force winds. With professional installation and careful maintenance, we would expect a concrete roof to last over half a century. If you live near the coast, concrete tiles will not be damaged by salt corrosion.
Cost Effective
Mass manufacturing techniques that were perfected in Britain in the Twentieth Century mean that concrete tiles are often cheaper than other roofing materials.
