Which Types of Green Roof Would Suit You?

13/10/2016

Green roofing, the practise of growing plants on a roof structure, has really taken off in the last few years. We have more and more enquiries asking about the possibilities of green roofs. There are three main types of green roofs – find out more about them.

Low Intensity Green Roofs

Sedum roofingThis is the most popular choice. A low intensity green roof provides a splash of colour in an urban environment. Mosses, grasses and sedum make excellent plants for this kind of roof. These plants will grow on a minimal mineral substrata and once sown, need precious little attention.

Middle Intensity Green Roofs

If you would like to grow shrubs and flowers on your green roof then you will need a thicker soil base and some method of irrigation. These plants tend not to be as hardy and drought resistant as mosses and sedum. You could set up an irrigation system that will automatically water your shrubs during dry spells.

High Intensity Green Roofs

A roof with a gardenOn a suitably strong roof, you can grow larger shrubs and even trees. This is the point where you cross over from green roof to roof garden. You will likely want access to this kind of roof so that you can enjoy your green space and take care of the watering and weeding that is essential with this kind of garden.
