Using cold applied roofing systems when working near thatch

24/03/2014
You know the chocolate box scene, a beautiful country cottage with a thatched roof. They look fantastic, but unfortunately all it takes a single spark or loose flame during building work and serious damage can done. As roofers we are occasionally asked to work in close proximity to thatched roofs and this immediately creates a potential fire hazard when it comes to installing traditional felt roofing systems. There is however a number of cold applied roofing systems that can be used to minimise the risk. For example the Polyroof 185 and Topseal GRP fibreglass roofing systems we install are cold applied which means, unlike felt alternatives, no blowtorches are required during the installation process. The benefits of this are shown in some work we recently undertook at the well-known Lavender House restaurant in Brundall, Norfolk. Having experienced problems with the flat roofed area of the premises for some time they contacted us to carry out a replacement. Due to the close proximity of thatch it was decided that a heat sensitive roofing solution was required. We removed the old roof covering and installed a tongue and groove structural deck, followed by GRP fibreglass. This system comes with a 25 year guarantee giving the owners complete peace of mind. From modern new build properties to traditional country cottages, if you need help with your flat roof do not hesitate to contact us to arrange a free inspection and quotation.
