Swift Installation: Bawdsey Radar Centre Completed in One Day

06/06/2017

Bawdsey Manor Estate was bought by the RAF in in 1935 and the manor house and outbuildings were staffed with research scientists working on a top-secret project: radar. The part that Bawdsey played in the development of this vital military technology is celebrated at the Bawdsey Radar Centre. The centre is currently undergoing refurbishment and is due to reopen to the public in September 2017. We were called in to install the 250m² flat roof.

The project to record oral testimony from people who were at Bawdsey before and during the Second World War was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Bawdsey Radar Centre will house an exhibition, a classroom and a visitor attraction – all aimed at telling the public about the development of radar.

Rolls of bitumen on a roof

The roof has had a new layer of concrete and is ready for the rolls of Axter “force solo” membrane to be applied. This single-layer waterproof membrane is a strong and economical solution for large flat roofs.

Transmitter masts like this one were responsible for sending the radio signals that were essential for spotting enemy planes during the Battle of Britain. The Luftwaffe had six times as many planes as the RAF.

RG Leverett completed the roof in just one day for a fraction of the cost quoted by alternative contractors. Speedy installation and a great finish left a very satisfied client.
