Little Jobs: Caring for the Roofs of Domestic Properties
23/05/2017We often notice an uptick in domestic roofing jobs after a heavy downpour like the one Norfolk experienced at the end of last week. If you wait until your roof is leaking before you call in the experts, you may wind up facing an expensive bill for repairs. Regular maintenance of the roof of your house is by far the cheaper option than having to replace a rotten timber frame.
Simple Visual Check
There will be some parts of your roof that you will be able to check for yourself. Just by looking up, you may be able to see if any roof tiles are broken or missing or if there is any obvious damage to your roofline. You may also be able to check the condition of a ground floor extension’s flat roof from an upstairs window. If you are confident up a ladder, you can take a closer look at your roof. Unless you know what you are doing, please don’t go clambering across the tiles – you may cause more damage than you locate.
Flat Roof
We’ll let you into a trade secret, a flat roof isn’t really flat. It has a slight gradient to allow water to drain away properly. Our modern flat roof installations have a high-performance membrane that can deal with standing water. However, heavy algal growth is a sign that water is sticking around longer than it should. If you want a real green roof – we can put one in for you!
Pitched Roof
As well as slipped or broken tiles, look out for chunks missing from your mortar in your roof verges and chimney stack. Make a close inspection (perhaps with binoculars) of your roof valleys – if they are blocked with moss and debris they may not be draining water away as effectively as they should be.
Contact the Professionals
Don’t wait until there is water leaking through your ceiling before you contact a professional roofing contractor. By that time, serious damage could already have been done.
