As Seen on TV: Sallow Lane Barn Conversion to be Featured on 'Derelict Rescue'

If you like to see the enormous effort that goes into transforming a derelict building into a stunning modern home, then you’ll love the new series of Derelict Rescue. Keep an eye out for the roof tile work on the Sallow Lane Barn Conversion episode - the skilled labour required for this element was contracted to RG Leverett.

The project involves the incredible transformation of a dilapidated barn into a beautiful living space. The owner, who also maintains the @sallowlanebarn Instagram account detailing the transformation, enlisted the expertise of RG Leverett to handle the roofing aspect of this ambitious undertaking.

Insulation and Battening

The client completed the structural timberwork, so our involvement began with the installation of a YBS BreatherQuilt insulating breather membrane to provide essential protection and insulation. Next, we added treated timber battens from John Brash, ensuring a sturdy and durable foundation for the roofing materials.

Two Types of Tiling

To crown the project, we installed Sandtoft Arcadia clay pantiles for the main roof. These distinctive tiles offer a traditional and elegant appearance, perfectly complementing the barn's character. For the porch roof, we opted for Sandtoft Humber Tuscan plain tiles.

For those unfamiliar with roofing terminology, pantiles and plain tiles are two common but distinct types of roof tiling. Pantiles have a distinctive S-curved profile and are typically laid in a staggered pattern. Plain tiles are flat or slightly curved and are usually laid in straight rows. They provide cleaner lines and a more contemporary look.

Intricate Ridge Work

One of the highlights of this project was the intricate ridge work, which showcased the exceptional skills of our roofers. The ridge was carefully bedded in cement, creating a visually striking and structurally sound feature. To integrate the extension roof seamlessly with the main roof, we laid lead flashing in key areas. Additionally, we installed modern Velux skylights, enhancing natural light and ventilation.
