4 Crazy Roofs You Can Actually Visit
09/10/2015At RG Leverett, we've helped create hundreds of roofs - but nothing quite like these crazy ideas...
New balls, please.
Dissatisfied with the gleaming opulence of their hotel, owners of the Burj-al-Arab in Dubai decided to convert their rooftop helipad into a grass tennis court and invited Roger Federer and Andre Agassi to play on it. The film shows them playing a very tentative couple of rallies. With no fences, you would not want to be chasing any balls down on this court. They finish by tiptoeing to the edge and firing a ball into the sea below. It takes an impressively long time to fall the 650 foot drop.
A roof with a view
Fancy a swim on your lunchbreak? Space is at a premium in Singapore, so the owners of this office complex have installed a pool on the roof. The architects even managed to incorporate the optical illusion that makes it look like you could swim right off the edge!
Tea before you tee off?
A little closer to home, did you know that you can play crazy golf on the rooftop at Selfridges? Players must tee off around a variety of London locations re-imagined as cakes. Don’t worry about the pollution either - the air has been artificially perfumed with the smell of bakewell tart.
Rooftop movies
Naturally, the fashion for special film screenings in unusual places has spread to the rooftop. There is even a club devoted to rooftop cinema that shows films on rooftops in New York, Los Angeles and London.
